More funds coming to Minnesota food shelves
More help is coming for hungry families who rely on Minnesota food shelves.
Minnesota Public Radio reports that $750,000 was approved in the just-concluded legislative session for the state's food shelves. That's a 30 percent increase in funding.
The increase comes in response to a greater demand. Colleen Moriarty, executive director of Hunger Solutions, told MPR that food shelves have experienced a 165 percent rise in visits in the past decade.
Besides using the allocation to buy food, Moriarty said she hopes food shelves will be able to extend their days and hours.
