Morning commute: Blizzard conditions in NW Minnesota, slick in metro

Twin Cities drivers Wednesday morning can expect another slow commute as motorists traverse snow-slicked roads.

Among the spinouts and accidents reported by MnDOT since midnight was a semitrailer that jackknifed on southbound Interstate 35 after 3 a.m. Wednesday south of Lakeville, the Star Tribune reported.

The metro got about an inch of snow, WCCO reports, but it left behind icy patches on the region's roadways. And it's still bitterly cold; the Twin Cities can expect a high around 5 degrees Wednesday, with a low of minus 12 degrees Wednesday night, the National Weather Service says. A wind chill advisory remains in effect until noon Thursday.

Also early Tuesday, dangerous weather was moving into the Fargo-Moorhead area, and other parts of northwest Minnnesota.

Strong northwest winds are creating white-out conditions west of the Twin Cities from Willmar to the eastern Dakotas, KSTP reported early Tuesday.

The weather service issued a blizzard warning from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday that includes New Ulm to the Fargo-Moorhead area, KSTP notes.

Officials warn that travel in open country could be very difficult, with strong northerly winds 25-40 mph blowing new light fluffy snow, KFGO AM in Fargo reported Tuesday morning. Wind chills in the northwest are dipping to 25-40 degrees below zero.

A brief one-day warm-up is still in the forecast for Friday, with metro highs in the 20s – before snow blows back in Friday night, followed by lower temperatures again Saturday, KARE 11 reports.
