A young mother was pushing her 15-month-old child in a stroller when both were hit by gunshots in a south Minneapolis park Thursday afternoon, police say.

Both mother and daughter are hospitalized in stable condition, WCCO reports, following the shooting near Peavey Park.

Police say the woman in her 20s was not the intended target of the shooting, but was caught in crossfire, KSTP reports.

Mayor Betsy Hodges issued a statement about the shooting:

"It’s unthinkable that a mother and her 15 month old would be shot in Minneapolis while simply walking down the street. I am outraged that this took place in our city and in our community. We as a community must continue to vehemently reject this kind of violence and channel our outrage into preventing the factors that lead us down this path. Right now the police department is doing everything possible to apprehend the shooter.”

KSTP says police with a K-9 unit were searching the area for casings or other evidence.

Police spokesman John Elder told the Pioneer Press the shooting occurred at 2:15 p.m. at the intersection of Park Ave. and Franklin Ave., alongside Peavey Park, which is in the heart of the Phillips neighborhood on Minneapolis' south side.

Police Chief Janeé Harteau told WCCO additional patrols and weapons investigators have been on the city's streets this summer "...all trying to get ahead of what’s happening that you’re seeing on the streets today.”

Separately, WCCO reported Thursday that numbers for the first half of 2015 show violent crimes in Minneapolis increased compared to last year. It's the first time in three years there's been a rise in homicides, which are up nearly 50 percent, the station says.
