A mother and her 6-month-old baby injured in a blaze that engulfed their mobile home are out of intensive care.

Alexis Liemthongsamout, 19, and her daughter Madysin Murch were in a critical condition after suffering from severe smoke inhalation last week when a fire destroyed their home in St. James, Minnesota, WCCO reports.

They were rescued from the blaze by local volunteer firefighters, and although Liemthongsamout still requires oxygen to breathe, she has described it as a "miracle" that her baby sustained nothing more than a small burn on her ear.

"I don't know how we survived," she told WCCO, describing waking up to a smoke-filled home. "I grabbed my baby from her room and then I tried getting out the back door.

"I look back at the videos after the damage and I can't believe we got out."

"She [Madysin] is a miracle ... it's like when I first met her. So happy she's alive," she added.

The pair were found by members of the St. James fire department on the floor of the mobile home, according to KEYC, and they were then airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center.

Firefighters later established that the cause of the fire was electrical. Madysin's father Steven Murch – who proposed to Liemthongsamout in hospital – said he "can't think them enough" for their rescue effort.

The community of St. James rallied around the family following the fire, KSTP reports, with a fund set up at First National Bank in St. James to help them get back on their feet.

Firefighters for Healing meanwhile brought the family baby essentials on Thursday, KARE 11 reports, and a fundraiser at Jake's Stadium Pizza in Mankato will be held on December 2 from 7 p.m.
