A woman is in custody in St. Paul after allegedly throwing her son from the balcony of their fourth-floor apartment.
St. Paul police says the 33-year-old woman was arrested in the St. Anthony Park neighborhood on Monday morning, after officers were initially called to a report of an attempted suicide after a witness thought they saw the boy jump from the balcony.
An investigation determined however that the boy had actually been thrown over the balcony by his mother, with the boy landing on the courtyard below.
The boy was conscious and breathing when responders arrived, and is believed to have suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries including several broken bones.
The incident happened around 8:40 a.m. at 787 Hampden Avenue. The boy's mother and her girlfriend are being interviewed by police, per the Pioneer Press.
The boy's younger sibling has been taken to a children's center to be interviewed about the incident, the newspaper notes.
Police spokesman Steve Linders told BMTN that each of the officers who responded to the scene has been called by Chief Todd Axtell to check they're ok, noting: "These types of calls are incredibly difficult for officers and first responders"
