Police investigating a report that a mother failed to pick up her child from daycare found her dead at her St. Paul home.

St. Paul PD said the "gut-wrenching" discovery was made Friday evening at a house on the 500 block of Charles Avenue.

The woman was found dead in one room of the house, and in another they found two children who were unharmed.

Police had been called to the house at 9:25 p.m. after it was reported the mother had not collected her child from daycare, with nobody answering the door when police knocked.

The mother appeared to be "gravely injured" when they found her, with blood found inside the house, and she was pronounced dead at the scene by St. Paul fire paramedics.

"Investigators are currently working to locate potential witnesses, gather evidence and determine who is responsible for the killing," St. Paul PD said.

"Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the department’s Homicide Unit at 651-266-5650."

The victim's identity and cause of death will be released at a later stage by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office.
