Two people died in Fridley on Monday when their motorcycle crashed into a minivan, the Anoka County Sheriff's office says.

According to a statement from Commander Paul Sommer, police and paramedics arrived at E. River Road and 79th Way a little after 3 p.m. and found that the two occupants of a three-wheeled motorcycle were dead.

Investigators say the motorcycle appears to have run a red light while headed north on River Road and crashed into the minivan. The motorcycle driver was a 52-year-old Fridley man, authorities say, while his passenger was an adult woman whose identity was unknown Monday evening.

A Fridley woman was driving the minivan and had her child with her. Both were evaluated at Unity Hospital and showed no signs of injuries, according to the sheriff's office.

River Road was expected to be closed for hours during the investigation of the crash.

A state website that tracks traffic fatalities showed Monday that 56 people had died on Minnesota roads so far in 2016. That compares to 38 at the same time a year ago.
