Motorcyclist gravely injured in crash with suspected impaired driver in St. Paul

The crash happened at Maryland Avenue and Hazelwood Street.

A motorcyclist was critically injured in a crash with a suspected impaired driver in St. Paul on Sunday evening. 

According to St. Paul police, the crash happened around 6:15 p.m. at the intersection of Maryland Avenue and Hazelwood Street. Officers and medics arrived to the scene and found a 2004 Ford Taurus with significant damage to the rear passenger side and a 21-year-old motorcyclist with extensive injuries. 

The motorcyclist was taken to Regions Hospital where he underwent surgery and was in intensive care with grave injuries, St. Paul police say. 

Witnesses said the car was going east on Maryland Avenue when it turned left to go northbound on Hazelwood Street. That's when the motorcycle struck it at a high rate of speed, throwing the motorcycle rider over the handlebars and into the street.

The driver of the Taurus, a 26-year-old woman from St. Paul was arrested on suspicion of being impaired.
