A motorcyclist was killed in Brooklyn Park Friday night after police say he lost control and hit a traffic semaphore.

The incident happened on Hwy. 252 at Humboldt Avenue North at 11:13 p.m., when a Harley Davidson rider heading southbound "at a high rate of speed" veered onto the shoulder.

The Minnesota State Patrol says the rider then lost control and hit the traffic light.

While the rider's identity hasn't yet been released, the State Patrol says he's a 45-year-old man from St. Paul.

It's the latest fatal incident in what has been a deadly year on Minnesota roads.

The Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety says there have been 226 fatalities on the roads this year, compared to 168 at the same time in 2020.
