Move over consoles, retro toys are making a comeback this Christmas

Retro is very much back in fashion among Minnesota's toy retailers, who have reported big demand for classic toys and games this Christmas.

Etch-a-Sketch, Yahtzee, Twister and even the humble old Jack-in-the-Box are proving popular among parents who want to introduce their own children to their old favorites, the Pioneer Press reports.

Minneapolis-based Target has released a series of vintage editions of old games this year, while Roberta Bonoff of Twin Cities toy seller Creative Kidstuff told the newspaper that fathers in their 40s have been going crazy this Christmas for Electric Football, a low-tech vibrating football game from the 1940s.

"Parents give their kids the toys that they loved, whether that's a Barbie doll or Lincoln Logs or Fisher-Price Toys," Kate Roberts, lead organizer of the "Toys of the '50s, '60s and '70s exhibit" at the Minnesota History Center, told the newspaper.

The timeless quality of children's classic have kept them popular in the face of growing competition from app or console-based gaming. This hark back to tradition is one of the reasons why LARK Toys in Kellogg, Minnesota, was named as one of the 10 best toy stores in the world by USA Today recently.

It's not just in Minnesota either. Market Watch says that five out of the top 10 toys that have been trending on Google in the run-up to the festive season are classic toys, with Amazon's Eva Lorenz telling the website "classic toys are making a comeback."

Legos, My Little Pony, Spirograph and the Easy-Bake Oven are listed among the website's "7 retro toys making a comeback" list this Christmas.

But the biggest sellers this year are still likely to be modern, with the New York Times reporting that tie-in merchandise from movies Frozen and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are still flying off the shelves.

That said, the newspaper does note that there had also been an surge in interest in more traditional gifts too, particularly in arts and crafts, construction and outdoor toys.
