Janeé Harteau got unanimous support from Minneapolis city council members Wednesday to be reappointed as chief of police.

Following about an hour of public comments, the Committee of the Whole (which includes all 13 City Council members) voted to reappoint Harteau for another three-year term as police chief. The full Minneapolis City Council is expected to officially approve the reappointment during its Friday meeting.

The committee had delayed its vote last week to give the community more time to voice their opinions, KSTP previously reported.

Many people, including Mayor Betsy Hodges and the Star Tribune's editorial board, have come out in support of Harteau, saying she deserves more time to continue implementing what she started, including reforming the department through her MPD 2.0 initiative.

But others have criticized her because the department isn't changing fast enough, KSTP reports. Harteau has been in the spotlight lately for police-community relations and trust issues following some high-profile incidents in the city, including police fatally shooting Jamar Clark and the subsequent demonstrations at the Fourth Precinct in north Minneapolis.

Harteau, who was appointed chief in 2012 by former Mayor R.T. Rybak, became the first female and openly gay leader of the state's largest police force. She has been with the Minneapolis Police Department for 30 years, WCCO notes.
