Mpls. council member: too many sex offenders live in same neighborhoods

Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels says too many of Minnesota's level three sex offenders are concentrated in just a few Minneapolis neighborhoods.

Samuels is calling on Hennepin County and the state to help see that offenders are dispersed across a broader area.

KSTP reports that half of Minnesota's sex offenders live in Hennepin County. The station found that most of Minneapolis' two dozen zip codes have fewer than five registered sex offenders as residents. But one is home to 27 and another to 34.

Samuels maintains the presence of those offenders hurts property values and could affect the crime rates in those neighborhoods.

The move to spread those offenders out through the county or state faces obstacles, though. In a 2011 story, MPR reported that finding housing they can afford and landlords who will rent to them are challenges for offenders.

KSTP says Samuels plans to introduce a city council resolution on the matter Wednesday.
