MSP Airport has had 'rash' of security alerts, threats in recent weeks

Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport says it has experienced an unusual level of security alerts in recent weeks – the latest of which happened Thursday morning.

The Pioneer Press reports that an unattended bag on the carousel at Terminal 1 tested positive for explosives at around 4 a.m., prompting the evacuation of the baggage claim level.

The Bloomington bomb squad was called in and found that the contents were not dangerous, with the claim level later reopened and no flights affected.

But a spokesman for the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) told BringMeTheNews there had been a "rash" of similar incidents in recent weeks, which he said was unusual even for an airport of its size.

"There has been a rash of unrelated incidents in recent weeks in which there have been bomb threats, false utterances by travelers, suspicious packages and bags that raise alerts," he said.

"Unfortunately, such instances are not uncommon at major airports. We have had more in recent weeks than usual, though."

The bag found this morning was the second to have been tested positive for explosives in as many weeks, with a portion of the ticketing area shut down on Aug. 1 after another unattended bag was found with traces – and was also later found to be safe.

And later that week, Minnesota's Department of Health and the FBI investigated after three packages were sent to the airport that were "suspicious in nature," according to KARE 11.
