MSP Airport food: Fewer healthy options than elsewhere, group says

Your options for a healthy meal at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport aren't great.

In fact, the airport ranks worst among the largest airports in the country, according to a new report from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

MSP got a score of 56 percent – dead last out of all 24 airports when it comes to "physician-approved customizable entrées" at eateries located in the complex.

The Biz Journal says the airports were ranked by dietitians, who assigned a percentage score. They're looking for cholesterol-free, plant-based meals.

At the top is Los Angeles International Airport with a 90 percent, with Newark Liberty (84 percent) in second and a tie for third between San Francisco International and Philadelphia International (82 percent).

Down near MSP's 56 percent: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta at 57 percent, and Orlando International at 61 percent.

(By the way, officials with the airport have been looking at a bunch of new concession options, including a craft beer bar and restaurant, a 24-hour sandwich shop, and a food truck court).

The site also offers a travel guide, breaking down some healthier options in different areas of the airport.

For example, if you're in the mall of Terminal 1, French Meadow Bakery & Café is an option with its French Meadow House Salad, Black Bean Chili, or Heart Vegan Stromboli. But if you're all the way back in Concourse E, check out Pei Wei and its vegetarian Japanese teriyaki bowl.

Here's a full look at what they recommend at MSP.

However, the committee does note most airport restaurants can tailor meals to be healthier, by not including cheese or steaming the vegetables for example.

McDonald's french fries or Big Macs are no longer an option at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International airport, at least for now. The Star Tribune reports the fast-food chain was forced out of its location in Concourse G once Delta Air Lines decided it wanted to give travelers some new options. The Golden Arches can relocate within the Humphrey terminal, but has yet to do so.
