Health department officials are investigating the sudden death of a Minnesota State University-Mankato student-athlete on Tuesday.

Adam Ellingson, 20, died on Tuesday morning after being hospitalized Saturday, with the MSU Mavericks paying tribute to the Rochester Lourdes High School graduate on its website.

Ellingson was a second-year student athlete in the Mavericks baseball program at MSU-Mankato, Minnesota State Director of Athletics Kevin Buisman said.

The Rochester Post Bulletin reports his death is being probed by the Minnesota Department of Health, which is assisting Blue Earth Public Health in testing Ellingson for meningitis, influenza and other infectious diseases.

"We're trying to rule out bacterial meningitis, for sure," MDH spokesman Doug Schultz told the newspaper. "We're doing our due diligence, but we don't think it's very likely. At this point, we don't have any reason to suspect that there's an increased risk for the public."

At Lourdes, Ellingson was a three-year letterman as a catcher and pitcher for the Eagles and was also a member of the football team that won the state high school AAA championship in 2014.

"Adam modeled the attributes of commitment, passion, and leadership and he will certainly be missed by his teammates and coaches who will honor his memory in moving forward," Buisman said. "As an athletic department and university, we extend our deepest condolences to Adam's family and friends, and all others affected by this tragic loss."

After a prayer service was held in Mankato on Monday night, when he was in a critical condition, friends of Ellingson's began posting #PrayforAdam on social media.
