A Duluth man suspected of beating his girlfriend's 3-year-old son to death in northwestern Minnesota is now charged with murder.
Sterling Kyle Andersen, 23, was charged with two counts of second-degree murder over last week's death of Steven Warren, Forum News Service reports.
KSTP says an autopsy determined the boy's cause of death was a homicidal assault and said there were more than 26 bruises his stomach.
At Monday's hearing, a judge set bail for Andersen at $1 million without conditions, $2 million with conditions, the station reports.
While Andersen initially told police Steven Warren had fallen and hit his head, the criminal complaint says he later confessed to hitting the boy – he didn't know how many times – telling investigators "I just lost control," Forum News says.
The boy's mother, Crystal Warren, told WDAY over the weekend, "I want the man that did this to get what he deserves, because no baby should have to go out like that. It's just not right."
The News Tribune reports each of the murder counts against Andersen would bring up to 40 years in prison if he's convicted.
Friends have started a GoFundMe account to help Crystal Warren pay for her son's funeral and other expenses.
