A husband and wife found dead in their home in Ramsey were struggling financially and received an eviction notice before the shootings, the Pioneer Press reports.

Police found the bodies of 65-year-old Mitchell Wolfe Fine and 67-year-old Caron Margaret Fine in a bedroom Tuesday night, both with gunshot wounds to the head.

The Anoka County Sheriff's Office determined Mitchell Fine used a handgun to shoot his wife, before shooting himself.

Investigators say a rifle was also used to shoot and kill nine cats.

Officers were sent to the home to conduct a welfare check after the couple's daughter called police. She reported that she had received a troubling email from her father indicating the two were being evicted from the house they rented and planned to kill themselves.

The newspaper reports the couple had health problems that prevented them from working. Both had a history of filing for bankruptcy.

The Fine's lived at the home on the 8500 block of 176th Lane NW, which was facing foreclosure, for at least a dozen years, the Star Tribune says.
