Family and friends are mourning the loss of a Mounds View man who died last week in his dorm room at at Arizona State University.

Jakob Ernst, 21, of Mounds View, Minnesota died unexpectedly on April 27, and even after an autopsy it remains unclear what caused his death, the Pioneer Press reports

His father, Robert Ernst, is hoping to raise $10,000 so his family can provide a scholarship in his son's name to a student at Irondale High School, where Jakob graduated from in 2015.

"In lieu of flowers we are asking you donate so we can present a scholarship in his name to a graduate of Irondale Class of 2019," Ernst wrote on the GoFundMe page for his son.

As of this writing, the fundraiser has reached more than $7,100 on 86 donations.

"The stories I have heard about Jake from everyone who has reached out to me, whether by phone, email, text or comments on here have only confirmed what I already knew and that is how good of a young man Jake was," Ernst wrote.

"He's made me proud beyond belief. And to hear how he's touched everyone he's come in contact with couldn't make me more proud. I'm lucky to have called him not only my son but my friend as well. I don't know how I'll ever get past this my heart will forever be empty.

"But at the same time so full of the memories and love we all had for such an amazing young man. I'm so lost knowing your gone and not knowing why."
