A North Dakota college football player has been charged in a shootout outside the Blue Nile Restaurant and Lounge early Saturday morning that killed 22-year-old Willie Smith III of St. Paul and wounded another man.

The Star Tribune reports 21-year-old Cedric Chappell Jr., a junior at Valley City State University, faces one count of second-degree murder and one count of attempted second-degree murder.

Chappell was arrested on campus Tuesday. He's currently in custody at the Barnes County Jail until he can be transported to Hennepin County.

According to the criminal complaint, a fight that broke inside the bar located at 2027 E. Franklin Avenue around closing time lead to two groups shooting at each other in an adjacent parking lot.

Chappell allegedly approached Smith and shot him once in the chest. The complaint states Chappell then shot another man who was running away in the leg.

When questioned by police, Chappell admitted to being at the scene of the shooting, according to FOX 9. He also described to investigators the clothes he was wearing that night, which was similar to the description given by the surviving victim.

The Star Tribune says Chappelle is a 2011 graduate of Washburn High School in Minneapolis and starred on the football and basketball teams.

Officials at Valley City State say Chappell has been suspended from the university as well as the football team.
