ND Senate committee hears testimony on proposed abortion ban

A North Dakota Senate committee reviewed two anti-abortion bills that, if approved, would essentially ban abortions in the state unless deemed medically necessary.

Both bills authored by Rep. Bette Grande, R-Fargo, have already passed through the House, the Forum reports.

The first bill would make it a misdemeanor if an abortion were performed solely based on the gender or genetic abnormality of an unborn child.

The second would make it illegal for anyone to perform an abortion if a heartbeat is detected in the womb, unless it's medically necessary or the health of the mother is at risk.

Ted Kleiman, a retired pediatrician, testified Tuesday, saying the legislation would force some women to resort to dangerous "backroom" abortions if the state's sole abortion clinic was shut down.

The committee took no action on the bills Tuesday.

ABC News says since 2010, 10 states have passed abortion bans for women who have been pregnant for more than 20 weeks, and in some cases earlier.

Developer proposes massive pyramid project in ND

Camp and Associates, an Atlanta-based development firm, says it wants to build a $150 million, pyramid-style apartment complex and entertainment center for the growing population in the oil-rich region of western North Dakota, the Williston Herald reports. The 500-unit "New Cimarron City" would stand taller than the pyramid-shaped Luxor hotel in Las Vegas. Local officials are questioning the rationale of the proposed building since it would be located about a half-hour east of Williston.
