Neighborhood complaints about Pedal Pubs rolling in

One sign of summer in Minneapolis is the bar-meets-bike Pedal Pub, which ferries beer drinkers from tavern to tavern. But the Pedal Pub Company, which has grown its metro fleet of Pedal Pubs from one to about a dozen in the last five years, has been the subject of complaints from northeast Minneapolis neighbors who say the pubs are an unwanted noise and nuisance, WCCO reports.

The pubs sometimes play loud music, and the imbibing pedalers get noisy, too, critics say. Pedal Pub foes have launched a Facebook page with nearly 2,000 followers as part of their campaign. One photo posted there says it shows a Pedal Pub blocking the progress of an ambulance.

“Everyone’s welcome in the neighborhood, but we ask that you respect that we live here,” Pedal Pub critic Chris Cowles told WCCO. “It’s a safety concern and a noise concern.”

One Pedal Pub manager said the company has worked with Minneapolis officials to define road rules. "Pilots" of the vehicles are trained to limit the music and patron noise, she told WCCO.

The human-powered taverns are becoming more popular nationwide – and attracting a host of regulatory challenges, USA Today reported last month.
