New Prague school threat turned out to be hoax, student in custody

New Prague police say a student is in custody after prank calls were made to police, prompting a frenzy at New Prague Middle School Wednesday morning.

The school was on "code-red" lockdown for more than an hour after the calls were made suggesting there had been a shooting.

Dozens of squad cars and emergency vehicles swarmed the school. Ambulances and a medical helicopter also responded to the scene, WCCO reported. The news was featured briefly on CNN.

KARE 11 reporter Bryan Piatt tweeted this photo from the scene:

After a search of the school, authorities later confirmed no shooter was found and all students and staff were safe. Investigators also found no evidence that shots were fired, KSTP reports.

Scott County Sheriff Kevin Studnicka gave the "all clear" around 10 a.m., the Star Tribune reported.

District officials canceled classes for the rest of the day at all New Prague schools to ease anxiety among students and parents. Students will resume as normal tomorrow.

Last month, the high school in New Prague was evacuated after a bomb threat, but nothing was found. Superintendent Larry Kauzlarich said Wednesday the student responsible in that case was expelled.

New Prague is about 45 miles southwest of the Twin Cities.
