Don't expect any mail, but you can go out shopping.

Minnesota is experiencing a cold start to 2018, with wind chill warnings in place for much of the state.

It makes for perfect "staying-inside" weather, but if you're one of those planning to brave the frigid air, here's what you'll find open – and closed – on New Year's Day.

Banks

All branches of Bremer, TCF, Wells Fargo and U.S. Banks in Minnesota will be closed, including those in grocery stores.

Post offices

Closed, with no regular mail service.

If you really, desperately need to ship something, you can use UPS and FedEx, but expect it to cost a hefty amount.

Transportation

In the Twin Cities, Metro Transit buses and the light rail will be following holiday schedules, while there will be no Northstar service.

Minnesota Transit Authority services will be following a weekend schedule, while services from Maple Grove Transit, Plymouth Transitlink and SouthWest Transit will not be running.

Public buildings and schools

State, local and federal offices are closed on Christmas Day. Most schools are on holiday break, as is the University of Minnesota and other colleges.

Stores and malls

Most malls and stores will be open on New Year's Day, though some may have reduced hours so check in advance.

Grocery stores will also be open, but again, check individual stores for hours.

Pharmacies

Most major pharmacies will be open normal hours.

Garbage and recycling pickup

Most follow this rule: If your garbage and recycling pickup falls on or follows a holiday, your service will be picked up one day late.

Parking

The City of Minneapolis will not enforce parking meters on New Year's Day. Neither will the City of St. Paul.

Note: Not all metered spaces in Minneapolis are operated by the city. Minneapolis Parks and Recreation, the University of Minnesota, and private organizations like Fairview/University Hospital operate their own meters and their holiday schedule may vary. Always read the information posted on the meter to be certain.

Restaurants

Most restaurants and coffee shops will likely be open for at least some hours today, though hours may vary from the norm.

The Pioneer Press has a list of Twin Cities restaurants opening today, while Time Money has compiled a similar list for national restaurant chains.
