Nice Ride breaks single day ride record during #NicestDayEver campaign
The Nice Ride bike-sharing program broke its record for the number of rides taken in a single day Saturday.
The record was set July 26, 2014, and on Saturday the organization had a goal of reaching 5,000 rides in 24 hours as part of its #NicestDayEver campaign, and Nice Ride smashed that goal by totaling 5,613 rides on Saturday.
The #NicestDayEver campaign was a partnership between Nice Ride and the Minneapolis Foundation to celebrate the foundation's centennial.
The Minneapolis Foundation gave away free helmets and 300 24-hour passes at six Minneapolis stations Saturday morning, and also donated $1 to the nonprofit Free Bikes 4 Kidz for every ride taken during the 24-hour period, for a total of $5,613.
“Minneapolis is famous for being a place where people will go the extra mile for a good cause – especially on bikes,” Sandra Vargas, president and CEO of The Minneapolis Foundation, said in a news release Sunday. “We’re thrilled to cap off our first century of community building by helping the Twin Cities set this record, while simultaneously supporting a local nonprofit that is making a difference for our kids.”
Ridership on the Nice Rides has increased by about 35 percent since last summer, the Star Tribune reports. Nice Ride also plans to add 20 new stations next month.
