Red Bull 'downhill ice cross' coming to St. Paul Cathedral

An extreme sport sometimes described as "downhill ice cross" is coming to the St. Paul Cathedral in January. Athletes competing in "Crashed Ice" skate down a specially designed ramp of ice at high-speed while navigating jumps and banked turns.

Red Bull's Crashed Ice underway in St. Paul

A couple hundred athletes from around the world are competing in the three-day event, including 75 Minnesotans. According to MPR, the 400-meter track starts by the Cathedral of Saint Paul and ends near the Kellogg Boulevard onramp to I-35E. It includes jumps, sharp turns and steep slopes. Skaters can reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour.

Stabbings, melee mar St. Paul Hmong event

Two men were stabbed at the Hmong Freedom Celebration and Sports Festival in St. Paul over the weekend, and another was robbed and stabbed as he left the event, police said. On Saturday, a fight involving 35 to 40 people broke out in which people threw chairs and hit each other with pipes, sticks and umbrellas. The 32nd annual event drew hundreds of athletes and as many as 30,000 spectators.

McCollum renews push to end military sponsorship of race cars

Minnesota Congresswoman Betty McCollum wants to prohibit the Pentagon from sponsoring NASCAR, pro wrestling, or fishing events. Her effort went nowhere last year, but this time she has a Republican co-sponsor and the measure gained committee approval.

Crashed Ice event returning to St. Paul this winter

City officials say Red Bull's Crashed Ice event is coming back for another round of reckless skating down St. Paul's Cathedral Hill. Last year the Minnesota debut of the extreme sport drew nearly 100,000 onlookers. The sport was born in Scandinavia when some daredevils tried skating down a bobsled run.

Crashed Ice helps boost January sales in St. Paul

Visit Saint Paul officials say they're confident the three-day competition generated $20 million in additional revenue. Thousands of spectators and hundreds of athletes took part in the event outside the St. Paul Cathedral in January.
