No jail time for Rochester man who mistakenly shot granddaughter

A Rochester pastor who had been charged with shooting his granddaughter after he mistakenly believed she was an intruder will not be jailed, KAAL reported.

Stanley Wilkinson, 61, was sentenced to 91 days in jail but the sentence was stayed. No one in the case was arguing for jail time and the Judge also didn't believe it was warranted, the station reported.

Wilkinson pleaded guilty in February. He acknowledged he did something "stupid," the Rochester Post Bulletin reported.

He had admitted he fired his gun through a sliding glass door and shot his 16-year-old granddaughter in the neck on Dec. 10.

Wilkinson's granddaughter had been staying with her grandparents in the house. She later told investigators that she'd left the house that night without her grandparents' knowledge, met friends and returned after about an hour to sneak back into the house, according to a criminal complaint.

Wilkinson had told investigators that he had thought his granddaughter was already in the house.

The granddaughter continues to live with Wilkinson and his wife, the Rochester Post Bulletin reported. Her father was in the courtroom Monday to support Wilkinson, the newspaper reported.

Similar cases have been reported around the nation in recent months, including in North Carolina, Connecticut and Louisiana.
