No more swiping: BMO Harris Bank launches cardless ATMs in Minnesota

Some ATMs in Minnesota are going cardless.

Canada-based BMO Harris Bank, the state's fifth-largest bank in terms of deposits, launched its "mobile cash" system at hundreds of ATMs nationwide, including in Minnesota, the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal reports.

The feature allows customers to withdraw cash at an ATM using the BMO mobile banking app on their phones, the bank says.

Mobile cash uses QR codes, so customers don't have to use their debit cards at the ATM, which enhances security, the bank said in a news release. No information is stored on a customer's phone, and because debit cards aren't needed, it eliminates the chance for card "skimming."

Payment security has been a hot topic in recent years following massive data breaches at big-name retailers like Target and Home Deport.

The Wall Street Journal says not only is this method safer, but it's also faster. Mobile cash transactions take 15 seconds, compared to 45 seconds for debit-card withdrawals.

The bank launched this service at 750 of its ATMs Monday, making BMO the U.S.'s biggest cardless ATM network, the Wall Street Journal says. Other banks, including Wintrust in Illinois and City National in Los Angeles, have been piloting cardless ATMs for a few years, CNN reported.

BMO Harris Bank plans to add the service to 150 more of its ATMs by June, reports say.

The bank has about 1,300 ATMs nationwide, including in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kansas, Arizona and Florida, the Chicago Tribune reports.
