A business that satisfied the Fargo-Moorhead area's sweet tooth for nearly a century will be closing its doors for good this April.

Quality Bakery, which has been in business for 92 years, announced today in a Facebook post that it will sell its last cake on April 30th.

Pete and Marcene Fendt, who have owned the bakery since 1982, told the Forum they decided to sell the company partly due to health issues – both have battled cancer in recent years.

“We’re both doing really well now, but I don’t want to wait to sell until I’m crippled and can’t walk,” Pete told the paper. “Both of us like to travel. We like seeing different parts of the country. Actually, we like visiting bakeries.”

The Fendts' update on Quality Bakery's Facebook page indicates they're also looking forward to retirement and spending more time with their kids and grandkids.

As for Quality Bakery's 17 employees, Valley News Live reports Pete is helping them all find new jobs.

The station notes that the Fendts actually started trying to sell the bakery about seven years ago, with the idea that a new owner would keep the business going. Unfortunately, such a buyer could apparently not be found.

WDAY says the new owner will use the building for "vocational training."
