North Dakota oil town considers new ban on campers

A new law being discussed would make it illegal to live in an RV within the city of Williston. However, housing is a major issue throughout western North Dakota because of a surge of temporary workers in the oil rich area. The Fargo Forum reports there are up to 400 campers throughout the community that would be in violation of the proposed city ordinance.

The goal is to help ease the housing shortage in the oil rich part of western North Dakota. Plans call for 10 buildings that will accommodate 240 campers, according to the Fargo Forum. The first phase of the project will open in July. Officials in Williston are considering a new law to ban RVs within the city.

Boardings at airports near the oil boom in western North Dakota have skyrocketed -- up 73 percent in Dickinson, 62 percent in Minot and 41 percent in Williston.

The hub of North Dakota's oil boom issued a record number of building permits in 2011. The Williston Herald reports the city issued more than $355 million worth of permits. That is more than three times what Williston issued in 2009.

St. Cloud-based Coborn's to build five stores in western North Dakota

Coborn's Inc. is expanding the company's footprint in the oil-rich region of North Dakota with five new stores by 2014, the St. Cloud Times reports. “North Dakota is a prime market for Coborn’s to expand,” Coborn’s President and CEO Chris Coborn said in a statement. Coborn's opened a Jamestown, N.D., store in May. The St. Cloud-based grocery chain also partnered with Williston-headquartered JK Foods to co-own three supermarkets.

Minnesota-made homes going to North Dakota oil boom

A Rochester company is gearing to send nearly 150 homes to the oil fields this year. Creative Modular Concepts owner Dale Jech tells the Post Bulletin, "Labor there is simply too expensive. Most of the houses now are coming from Indiana. They're even buying some in Florida and shipping them to North Dakota."
