North Dakota oil drillers set another production record

Records from the state's Department of Natural Resources show North Dakota produced 18.3 million barrels of crude in April -- up from 17.9 million barrels in March. Minnesota's western neighbor has surpassed Alaska to take the No. 2 slot among the states. Natural gas production also set a record in April.

North Dakota could soon be nation's No. 2 oil producer

The state is on track to overtake California and Alaska in oil production. It would trail only Texas. The state now pumps out about 444,000 barrels a day.

Mild winter weather helped boost activity. North Dakota produced more than 558,000 barrels per day in February. The oil rich region passed California in January to be the third largest oil producer and could soon overtake No. 2 Alaska.

Delta Air Lines considers buying North Dakota oil

The Atlanta-based carrier is looking into using crude oil from western North Dakota to supply its new refinery in Pennsylvania, the Associated Press reports. Delta Air Lines bought the refinery near Philadelphia from Phillips 66 for $150 million in May with hopes of cutting fuel costs by making its own jet fuel.

Bills wants Minnesota more like North Dakota

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Kurt Bills says American farmers should be left alone, with less federal support, much like oil producers in western North Dakota. “My goal is to become North Dakota, not Washington, D.C.,” Bills said Wednesday, referring to that state’s oil boom that he said occurred with little government assistance. Bills is challenging Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., who is seeking a second term. The two of them made their first joint appearance Wednesday.

The flow of crude oil from North Dakota's fields is backing up at a terminal in Clearbrook, Minnesota. The Canadian company that owns the terminal says the outgoing pipeline is operating at capacity and needs an upgrade. But a North Dakota competitor suspects the company is favoring tar sands oil from north of the border.
