North Memorial hands out second wave of pink slips

North Memorial Medical Center has laid off more workers as the Robbinsdale-based health care organization works to downsize and restructure, the Star Tribune reports. It's unclear how many employees were let go, but a spokeswoman said most of the staff reductions did not involve direct patient care.

"The changes made are part of a larger plan to ensure the entire North Memorial Health Care system is sustainable and successful as the organization continues to expand and strengthen its clinic and other outpatient services," according to the statement.

North Memorial Health Care eliminated an unknown number of leadership positions last month when CEO Larry Taylor warned that big changes were coming in early 2013 to "resize and realign" the 518-bed hospital to become “more the size of a suburban hospital."

The Business Journal notes North Memorial Health Care has about 5,000 employees and it recently closed an urgent care clinic in Eagan.

Meanwhile, plans are moving forward for a new North Memorial Clinic in Plymouth, Patch reports.

Members of the Minnesota Nurses Association ratified a new contract at six hospitals — including North Memorial — in December. The new contract takes effect in June and offers a 4.5 percent raise over the next three years.
