An online fundraiser has been launched to help a Willernie, Minnesota, woman pay a nearly $3,000 vet bill after she found her dog severely injured.

The woman, identified as Gemma, believes that a man renting her home beat her dog Frodo to "near death," the GoFundMe account says

Sadly, despite efforts to save the dog's life, it didn't survive.

"Gemma is heartbroken and has a vet bill of $2,700 that needs to be paid. We all love Gemma and know that she would help us out in our time of need," the fundraiser says.

According to the Pioneer Press, the dog, a bichon frise, suffered broken ribs, a punctured lung and a bruised, bloodied face. The newspaper says the Washington County Sheriff's Office is investigating the animal abuse allegation.

Meanwhile, the renter is said to have left the residence on Gemma's demands and fled without paying January's rent.

The fundraiser's goal is to raise enough money to pay off the vet bill and help Gemma live without needing a roommate for a while.
