A skier and a snowmobiler died in separate incidents in northern Minnesota over the weekend.

Both happened in Cook County, with the sheriff's office reporting the first incident happened Saturday around 4:55 p.m. with a report of an overdo skier. David McCarthy, 60, was skiing in the Pincushion Ski Area and search rescue crews found him deceased.

There were no signs of trauma or suspicious activity. The Midwest Medical Examiner's Office will announce a cause of death at a later date.

On Sunday, at approximately 9:50 a.m., the sheriff's office responded to a snowmobile crash on the North Shore State Trail near the Temperance River Road in Schroeder.

On arrival, first responders found the snowmobiler with their helmet intact but having trouble breathing. Life-saving efforts through CPR were attempted until a doctor from North Shore Health pronounced the woman dead around 10:45 a.m.

The snowmobile victim has been identified as Lisa Schmitz, 63, of Mankato.

The crash is under investigation and an autopsy will be conducted to determine a cause of death.

No further information about either incident is available.
