Notable uptick in BWIs on Lake Minnetonka over 4th of July weekend

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and Minnesota DNR provided BWI figures.

Lake Minnetonka, known for its 4th of July crowds and revelry, saw 11 BWIs over this year's Independence Day weekend.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office tallied six boating while intoxicated incidents from Friday, July 2, through Monday, July 5, a spokesperson told Bring Me The News. And the Minnesota DNR tallied five BWIs, an agency spokesperson said.

The 11 BUIs represent a notable increase compared to figures provided in recent years.

The sheriff's office said there were six BWIs on Lake Minnetonka over the 2020 4th of July holiday, with three BWIs in 2019 and none in 2018, Southwest News Media reported.

Authorities promised extra BWI enforcement throughout the state for the holiday as part of Operation Dry Water. The DNR said intoxicated boating is "the leading contributing factor in boating accidents and fatalities," noting nine of the 16 boating deaths in Minnesota last year involved alcohol.
