Lake Minnetonka, known for its 4th of July crowds and revelry, saw 11 BWIs over this year's Independence Day weekend.
The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office tallied six boating while intoxicated incidents from Friday, July 2, through Monday, July 5, a spokesperson told Bring Me The News. And the Minnesota DNR tallied five BWIs, an agency spokesperson said.
The 11 BUIs represent a notable increase compared to figures provided in recent years.
Authorities promised extra BWI enforcement throughout the state for the holiday as part of Operation Dry Water. The DNR said intoxicated boating is "the leading contributing factor in boating accidents and fatalities," noting nine of the 16 boating deaths in Minnesota last year involved alcohol.
