The state Board of Animal Health said Friday that a 4-year-old cow found dead in northwest Minnesota on Monday died of anthrax, the first case reported in the state since 2008.

The Associated Press reports the beef herd on a farm in Pennington County had not been vaccinated and is under quarantine for at least 30 days if there are no more cases.

Cattle, sheep, goats and other grazing animals are most commonly affected by the disease caused by spores in the soil.

The board is recommending all cattle producers in the northwestern part of the state vaccinate their animals for anthrax.

Since 2000, all reported cases of anthrax were confined to northwest Minnesota.

Just two days ago, North Dakota confirmed the state's first case of anthrax this year after a beef cow died, according to the Bismarck Tribune.
