A northwest Wisconsin man underwent surgery at a Twin Cities hospital this week after being mauled by a black bear.

Jerry Brown, 63, was doing yard work outside his Shell Lake cabin Monday night when his dog got tangled with the bear.

When Brown attempted to intervene, the bear attacked him.

WEAU reports Brown lost his left eye and suffered severe injuries to his face and arm. Fortunately, there was no brain damage.

Surgeons at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale were able repair some of the broken bones with metal plates, but Brown has a long recovery ahead.

"He's gonna be a walking wounded man for a long time," the victim's brother, Bob Brown, told the television station. "We just want to see him up walking and talking."

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is trying to locate the bear. Jerry Brown's other brother, Randy Brown, shot the bear after the attack, injuring the animal before it ran away.
