Obama heaps praise on Minnesota company

In his nomination acceptance speech Thursday night, President Barack Obama listed inspiring stories that give him hope, and he singled out Warroad, Minnesota's Marvin Windows and Doors for refusing to lay off workers even through difficult economic times.

In a closely watched nomination acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, President Barack Obama said he found inspiration in a small business in Warroad, Minn.

To thunderous applause, he listed hope-stirring stories from around the country, including that of Marvin Windows and Doors.

"The family business in Warroad, Minnesota that didn't lay off a single one of their 4,000 employees during this recession, even when their competitors shut down dozens of plants, even when it meant the owners gave up some perks and pay – because they understood their biggest asset was the community and the workers who helped build that business – they give me hope," Obama said.

The New York Times last year profiled the company that was defying the lay-off trend in housing-related businesses. Obama has given Marvin a shout-out previously, including in a December speech in Kansas.

Despite the spotlight Obama has put on the company, the Marvin family has supported Republicans, MinnPost and the Star Tribune note.
