Obama signs GMO label bill into law

President Obama signed a bill into law that requires labeling of food that contain genetically modified ingredients.

The bill makes companies that produce food that contain GMOs to signify their ingredients through an easy-to-see label or an electronic code readable by smartphones.

The U.S. House passed the proposal 306-117 two weeks ago, which was a week after the U.S. Senate approved it 63-30.

Every Minnesota U.S. Senator and Representative who voted on the bill voted "yea."

The Department of Agriculture will have two years to write the new rules on GMO labeling.

GMO crops have their genetic information modified to give a plant a trait that does not occur naturally, like disease resistance or a higher yield, and they are probably more common than you think.

Somewhere between 75 percent to 80 percent of foods contain genetically modified ingredients, the Associated Press reported. Most of those ingredients are corn and soy-based that are eaten by livestock or made into common ingredients like high-fructose corn syrup and cornstarch.

According to the FDA, its policy is to make sure all food that goes to market is safe for human consumption regardless of how it is manufactured or produced.
