President Barack Obama's visit to Minneapolis on Monday will be the first trip outside Washington to pitch his proposals for gun control.

Obama will meet with local leaders and law enforcement on ways to curb gun violence. Minneapolis Police Chief Janeé Harteau and Hennepin County Sheriff Richard Stanek were part of similar discussions with the president at the White House on Monday.

Following the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., Obama introduced a gun control plan that includes executive actions and legislative proposals.

The Senate Judiciary Committee, which includes both Minnesota Democratic Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken, held its first hearings on gun violence Wednesday. It opened with an emotional appeal by former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who narrowly survived a shooting rampage in 2011.

MPR says among hundreds in the audience at the hearing was Miya Rahamim. Her father was one of the seven people killed in the mass shooting at Accent Signage in Minneapolis last September. Rahamim is a lawyer in Washington and has gotten involved in the gun control movement.

In Minneapolis, Mayor R.T. Rybak said Wednesday he wants to partner with gun suppliers in the effort to fight gun violence, WCCO reports.
