Police shot suspect after he fired at officers, officials say

It's the second officer-involved shooting in as many days.

Police shot a man early Wednesday who they say fled a homicide scene and led police on a chase that went from Prior Lake to Edina.

The events that unfolded began at 2:11 a.m. in Prior Lake, when police found a man who had been shot (he later died) and saw a car fleeing the scene, according to a news release.

Officials pursued the vehicle, with the chase ending near the Bren Road exit to Highway 169 just before 3 a.m., officials said at a news conference. Three suspects then fled the vehicle – two were captured right away, while the third exchanged gunfire with two Eden Prairie officers before being shot.

He was taken to a local hospital; officials wouldn't say whether he's expected to survive. No officers were injured in the incident.

The area where the incident happened was closed to traffic through the morning commute. It's not clear when it'll reopen.

Here's the scene around 9 a.m. – several squad cars were still on the scene.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is investigating the officer-involved shooting, while the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting the Prior Lake Police Department in the homicide investigation.

Suspect shot in St. Louis County

This is the second officer-involved shooting in Minnesota in as many days.

Just after midnight Tuesday, a St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot a suspect following a 17-minute chase, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). The man is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The BCA says Virginia, Minnesota, police officers spotted a motorist on Highway 53 and Highway 169 who had an existing warrant for a felon in possession of a firearm. When they tried to pull him over, he fled from Virginia through Eveleth.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, the Eveleth Police Department and the Minnesota State Patrol responded to assist Virginia police in the pursuit of the suspect.

Following the 17-minute chase, the suspect got out of his vehicle and fled into the woods in Eveleth. "At one point, a pursuing St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office deputy fired his weapon, striking the subject," the release says.

The suspect walked out of the woods and surrendered. Police recovered a gun at the scene.

Officer-involved shootings

According to the Washington Post's use of deadly force database, 857 people have been killed by police in the United States this year. That includes 13 in Minnesota.

The paper says 991 were killed by police in 2015.
