The off-duty police officer killed while riding his bicycle early Sunday morning has been identified.

Kevin Hegyi, a detective with Hopkins Police Department, was traveling westbound on Industrial Boulevard in Rogers just after midnight Sunday when he was in a collision with a car driving the same direction.

The 45-year-old was unconscious when responders arrived and suffered a head injury that would ultimately prove fatal.

"We regret to inform our community of this tragic loss," Hopkins PD said on Facebook. "Kevin was a great asset to our department and community. Please keep his family, friends and our department in your thoughts."

Hegyi's LinkedIn page has him listed as being an employee of the City of Hopkins for the past seven years.

Rogers Police Department continues to investigate the crash, with the driver of the car cooperating with the investigation.
