A man who killed himself on a bridge over Interstate 494 in Bloomington last week has been identified.

Anton Lamont Burnes, 40, of Lakeville, died just before 7 p.m. on March 18 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head on Westbound I-494 and Second Avenue South, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner says, noting his death is a suicide.

Last week, the Bloomington Police Department said before Burnes killed himself, he had been shooting at vehicles from the pedestrian bridge across the interstate near the Portland Avenue interchange.

Police said one officer fired at the man as he turned the gun on traffic but it wasn't clear if he was hit. Burnes then climbed the fencing over the bridge, began firing again, before shooting himself and falling from the bridge.

The incident caused I-494 to be closed in both directions Thursday evening.

The Bloomington and Richfield police departments and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are investigating the incident.

Anyone dealing with a suicidal crisis or emotional distress can always contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by calling 1-800-273-8255. The lifeline is available 24/7/365.
