Officials let fire burn on island in Lake Superior

There's a small fire on one of the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior that's been burning for weeks, and National Park Service rangers have no plans to put it out.

According to WDIO, visitors reported the fire on York Island to Apostle Islands National Lakeshore park staff last Thursday. Park service officials believe the fire was ignited by lightning strike in July and is burning slowly in an area of duff and downed vegetation.

Park officials say they didn't discover the fire earlier because it wasn't visible from the lake. The fire is currently burning less than an acre in size.

Northland's NewsCenter says the smell of smoke helped the rangers track the fire to the western end of the undeveloped 321-acre island.

Park officials will reportedly let the fire continue to burn because the heat and humidity have kept the fire from spreading. Officials say the fire will burn out on its own as long as damp conditions continue.

Officials say York Island – including its three campsites – will remain open for public use.

The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore includes a group of 21 islands off the Bayfield Peninsula in northern Wisconsin.
