Officials want info on man involved in 'suspicious' incident at an elementary school

The man walked into the school and asked for a child by name – but the family doesn't know him.

Officials are looking into a "suspicious" incident involving a student at Lake Elmo Elementary School.

On Wednesday at around 5:30 p.m., a man walked into the school and asked for a child, by name, who was in an after school program, the Washington County Sheriff's Office said in an email news release.

The man isn't know to staff or the child's family, and school staff told the man to speak to the administration to get the child released. The man then left, with the sheriff's office noting he didn't have contact with any students.

The man is described as being white and middle aged. He's 5-foot-10, and has oily, unkempt, white-colored, shoulder-length hair.

Officials are hoping anyone who has information on this incident will call the Washington County Sheriff's Office tip line at 651-430-7850.

There was another suspicious incident involving a different man who approached a child at a bus stop near the elementary school on Friday morning, but the Washington County Sheriff's Office says that person has since come forward and investigators have "cleared" the case.

Officials are encouraging parents to go over safety plans with their kids, and be "extra vigilant."

The Jacob Wetterling Resource Center has tips for parents on how to talk to their kids about safety, including when it comes to strangers. The National Crime Prevention Council also has information to help teach kids about safety around strangers.
