Oh so that's what St. Paul's mayor is doing next – running for governor

Just like a lot of people thought, St. Paul's mayor has his eyes on a higher office.

When St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman said on Dec. 1 he wasn't going to run for re-election, there were questions about whether he might set his sights on the Governor's Residence.

Turns out the answer to those questions was "Yes."

“From small towns to larger cities, we all want good paying jobs, a strong future for our children, a sustainable environment and safe communities for our families," he said in a news release. "Here in Minnesota, we understand this only comes from hard work, a commitment to fairness and a willingness to make bold decisions."

He also listed what he called his "guiding principles": That Minnesota is at its best when we work together, are true to ourselves, and understand nobody has to lose for people to win.

Coleman was first elected as St. Paul's mayor in 2005. He's now in his third term, which ends next year. In an email announcement, he said he filed his gubernatorial paperwork Tuesday.

He's the second person to announce a run for governor, which will be up for a vote on Nov. 6, 2018. Erin Murphy, a longtime DFL state representative, said in November she will run.

Both will be up to replace the current governor, DFLer Mark Dayton, who has said he isn't interested in coming back for a third term.
