Fox 9 reports shelters are accommodating more people Christmas Eve and Christmas Day as volunteers come forward to help in the frigid weather. At Simpson House in the Whittier neighborhood, those volunteers include former clients whose fortunes have improved. The Salvation Army shelter in Minneapolis, which normally houses 450, plans to accommodate 800 this week.

KSTP reported on a Minnesotan who's raising money for the state's homeless by hiking the 2,180 mile Appalachian Trail. Jake Gale is hiking in support of People Serving People, a nonprofit that helps homeless families. Gale is a civilian who works overseas for the Department of Defense. On his blog, Gale says he is undertaking the adventure "because I know what it is to to belong someplace and lose it, and in losing that sense of belonging want nothing more than to regain it."

WCCO has the story of an East Bethel teenager who saved to buy gifts for homeless people. Jessica Peterson,18, makes less than $8 an hour serving tacos at a fast food restaurant in Coon Rapids.

But she bought $450 in gifts for the residents of Stepping Stone, the only adult homeless shelter in Anoka County.

“They gave us all the names and the sizes they wanted,” Peterson said, “and then my mom wrote out cards for each one. Right now, it’s nice to know that people care about them,” she said, “and they’re not alone in the world.”
