On the run for 6 years, fugitive arrested after being featured on smartphone app

Looking to arrest a fugitive wanted on child porn charges? There's an app for that.

Adney Allen, a 51-year-old who was indicted in 2009 on child porn charges, was apprehended Nov. 26 in Redby, Minnesota, after five years as a fugitive when a tipster saw the suspect on a newly launched smartphone app.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (often shortened to "ICE") detailed the arrest in a news release.

In July 2009, Allen was indicted by a federal grand jury in Fargo for possessing, distributing and receiving child pornography. He left the area as the charges came in and had been considered a fugitive since.

But his face and case were recently featured on ICE's Operation Predator app. The program is sort of like Facebook meets "America's Most Wanted." You can see a screenshot of the app at right.

It shows photos, names and information of fugitives and suspected child predators. It also features a section of those arrested, and a link to a tip line (either via phone or electronic message, both of which are staffed every second of every day). ICE says it's the first app of its kind in U.S. federal law enforcement.

The tipster saw Allen during a media campaign for the app's October Android release, and contacted authorities, telling them Allen was living in a trailer in a remote wooded area in Redby, on the Red Lake Indian Reservation.

He was arrested by tribal police on Nov. 26, then turned over to federal agents two days later.

ICE says the app has aided in the arrest of at least four other suspected child predators.
