Laura Ingalls is born near Pepin, Wisconsin.

Later Laura Ingalls Wilder, the writer would briefly live in Redwood County in the 1870s and pen the "Little House on the Prairie" children's book series. In 1974 it became a popular TV series starring Melissa Gilbert as Wilder, and ran for nine seasons.

The 12 books written by Wilder in the series detailed her life as a young girl in a pioneer family. After her death in 1957, 35 other books were either written about Wilder's series or created spinoffs of 'Little House'.

Wilder was a runner-up for the Newbery Medal five times, the top award in children's literature given by the American Library Association. In 1954, the ALA would name a lifetime achievement award in children's literature for Wilder and honor her with it.
