The minivan ran a stop sign, left the road and hit a tree.

An unidentified driver was killed early Sunday morning on a northwestern Wisconsin highway, with authorities saying the vehicle failed to stop for a stop sign.

The wreck happened at the intersection of U.S. Highway 8 and Highway 63, where the Honda Odyssey minivan left the roadway at about 3:45 a.m.

A news release says the van went past a stop sign at a high rate of speed, and became "entangled in the wood line on Northeast corner of that intersection."

The vehicle's passenger was the one who called 911, reporting that the driver was trapped and not breathing.

The Turtle Lake Fire Department responded with extrication equipment, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:00 a.m.

The name of the deceased has not yet been released, pending notification of family.

Authorities are still investigating the crash, so it's not clear if the weather or icy roads played any role.
