One person is dead and another is in a critical condition after the car they were in was struck by a Green Line light rail train in St. Paul Sunday afternoon.
The crash happened around 4 p.m. near the Capitol/Rice Street Station, with the vehicle sustaining extensive damage in the collision with the eastbound train.
One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to Regions Hospital after being extricated from the car, and is receiving treatment for severe injuries.
The Green Line train operator was also taken to a hospital for an evaluation.
Metro Transit says at this time it's too early to say how the vehicle came to be on the tracks as the train was passing through.
The collision led to the Green Line being closed for several hours between Union Depot and Hamline Avenue, with bus replacement services brought in.
